With the Princess of Wales recently swapping royal engagements for rugged ridgelines, now feels like the perfect time to lace up your walking boots and take on the UK’s iconic Three Peaks challenge for sick children across the South West.

The Grand Appeal’s Event Fundraiser, Lucy, took on this epic challenge last year in support of Bristol Children’s Hospital and St Michael’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. From training tricks to packing essentials, she’s sharing her top tips for anyone thinking of conquering Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon this year.

What training should I do for the Three Peaks Challenge?

Lucy began training around 2 months before the challenge, building up to hikes lasting three to six hours. Even regular walks can make a difference, so try to fit this into your daily routine wherever you can.

How do I prepare for the climbs in the Three Peaks Challenge?

The climbs are steep and demanding, so hill walks and stair workouts are some of the ways to prepare. Lucy says she would focus on this type of training even more if she took on the challenge again.

Should I train with the kit I’ll be carrying?

Get used to wearing your walking boots and carrying a backpack before challenge weekend. Breaking in your boots and adapting to the extra weight will help you feel more comfortable on the mountains.

What should I pack?

A good head torch, warm layers, spare socks, snacks and a buff all made Lucy’s challenge easier. Hiking poles were also a game changer, especially on tricker descents.

Can anyone complete the challenge?

“Don’t doubt yourself. It’s challenging, but it’s absolutely achievable. Trust your training.”  Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or taking on your first big mountain adventure, the Three Peaks Challenge might just show you how much you’re capable of.

The Challenge will take place on Saturday 3 – Monday 5 Oct 2026. Although that may feel like a little way off, sign-ups close on Friday 31 July so now is the moment to claim your place before the peaks start calling.
