Our British Transplant Games Team Brings Home the Gold!

Share this:

A superstar team of patients recently took on the British Transplant Games.

The team from Lighthouse Ward in Bristol Children’s Hospital, which treats bladder and kidney problems, recently took on the British Transplant Games. This exceptional group brought home several medals – including gold!

What a team we had at this year’s British Transplant Games! The games see over 1,000 participants, some as young as five, compete in a fantastic show of sportsmanship and athletics. The event is open to people who have had an organ, stem cell or bone marrow transplant.

Patients and their families from Lighthouse Ward in Bristol Children’s Hospital took on the games in Nottingham from 1 – 4 August.

Each year, we proudly fund travel and accommodation to the games for patients, their families and accompanying staff members. It’s important to The Grand Appeal that patients can participate in the games, which celebrate life after a transplant and promote a healthy lifestyle.

This year, we’d like to extend special thanks to our good friends at Kidney Care UK and The Lodge of Unity No.7401, who generously supported us by helping fund the team’s participation. We’d also like to say a big thank you to Jessica, Eleanor and Emily, three wonderful members of Bristol Children’s Hospital staff who accompanied our team to the games and made the ultimate cheer squad.

Bringing home the gold

Our fantastic participants weren’t afraid to get stuck in, taking part in a huge range of sports: advanced archery, bowling, obstacle races, sprints, wheelchair races and basketball, just to name a few!

Max, Ariana, Nick, Noah, Andrew, Tom, Robert, Elizabeth and their families took part in the games and did Bristol Children’s Hospital very proud.

This was Nick’s first British Transplant Games and it was wonderful to watch him enjoying it. It was great to meet so many people with similar experiences and to enjoy sport that had a perfect mix of healthy competition and celebration of being able to take part. Every competitor was cheered no matter where they finished and the number of participants in the Donor Run showed what it meant to everyone.

Together, they brought home four golds, three silvers and three bronze medals!

We’re so proud of this fantastic group of patients who are determined to show that illnesses and transplants won’t stop them.
