We’re excited to announce our new Home from Home Appeal, to raise £1.5million to provide free accommodation for families at Bristol Children’s Hospital.
Bristol Children’s Hospital cares for 100,000 sick children and babies a year from across the South West and beyond, providing lifesaving equipment and specialist care to treat some of the most complex and life-threatening conditions.
However, this also means that more and more children, from further and further away, are travelling to Bristol. Their families need somewhere to stay while they are cared for, and there is simply not enough accommodation currently available.
For families, finding a place to stay adds even more stress to the pressure of having a child who is critically ill. Many also have to face hours travelling to and from Bristol, when they could be spending time with their child.
They need somewhere to stay close to the hospital, so that they are always on hand to provide the love, familiarity and reassurance that makes a huge difference to a child’s recovery.
One family with first-hand experience is Joe Spurgeon and Elly Salisbury. Joe and Elly stayed in Cots for Tots House, our free family accommodation unit supporting the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Michael’s Hospital, after their twins Jay and Cormac were born three months prematurely. Sadly, Jay passed away at just four days old, and Cormac was diagnosed with chronic lung disease.
Joe said, ‘We were so scared, so confused and so tired, that to have someone provide us with somewhere clean, quiet and calm to stay was just the kindest thing anyone could have done. After Jay died being close to Cormac felt essential, and staying at the House made it all a bit easier to bear. It’s hard to put into words just how much having that accommodation meant to us.’
Building on the work of Cots for Tots House, our new accommodation will provide a Home from Home for as many as 150 families a year at Bristol Children’s Hospital. With ensuite rooms and self-contained apartments, as well as kitchens, living areas and laundry facilities, it will give families somewhere comfortable, welcoming and supportive to stay just a few minutes’ walk from their child’s bedside.
The Grand Appeal has already acquired a building directly opposite Bristol Children’s Hospital, and now with your help we can transform it into a Home from Home. Please get involved and help us reach our £1.5million target!
