Education Umbrella gets running!

With the days getting longer and the weather getting that little bit warmer, we are one step closer to one of our favourite events of the year: The Great Bristol Family Run! This year, the energetic crowd from Bristol-based book retailer, Education Umbrella, is gearing up for the start line on Sunday 13th May.

A unique and friendly event, the family run takes place after the 10K, giving families with children as young as three years old, the chance to compete together. Education Umbrella employee, Ruth, and her husband, Graham, are taking on the mile with their boys Luke and Tom, and she is also joined by colleagues, Sarah, who is running with her daughter Livi, Becca, with her son Harry and Charlotte, with daughters Matilda and Megan!

We asked Ruth what they are looking forward to most on the day: ‘‘In the past the family run has always been such a fun and friendly local event that anyone can get involved in. This will be the first time I have run it with colleagues and their children, so I’m really excited about that! Recently, I have been talking to Luke and Tom about the race and they are so excited, especially since their race numbers and t-shirts have arrived! We have completed some practice runs around the block and are really looking forward to flying The Grand Appeal flag on the day.’’

Ruth and Graham’s relationship with Bristol Children’s Hospital began in 2012, when their son Luke was diagnosed with TGA (Transposition of the Great Arteries) and a coarctation at his 20 week scan. Once Luke was born, he had open heart, corrective surgery at eight days old. Fortunately, Luke is now a happy, healthy boy and he started school in September. Ruth and Graham wanted to use this opportunity to fundraise as a token of their gratitude to the doctors, nurses and surgeons at Bristol Children’s Hospital that helped keep their family together.

Becca also has her own personal reasons for wanting to run for the Bristol Children’s Hospital charity, as her son Harry was cared for there when he was just two years old. Becca was overwhelmed by the standard to care, the kindness and comfort given by each member of hospital staff: ‘’Since Harry was admitted, I know just how lucky we are to have this world-class care on our doorstep. Every opportunity I find to help raise money for The Grand Appeal, I will!’’

A huge thank you to the team from Education Umbrella for your fantastic support. We are looking forward to seeing you all on the day, for what promises to be a cracking day! Be sure to look out for The Grand Appeal cheer squad on your way around!
