The Grand Appeal is also fundraising to provide a Life Support Machine for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, a vital piece of equipment that will be used on the most critically ill babies and children, following major open heart surgery or during critical periods of their illness.
The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children is the lead centre for paediatric intensive care in the South West and one of the largest in the country, caring for new born babies to adolescents following heart surgery and with a variety of other conditions from breathing problems to meningitis and children following accidents.
The majority of critically ill infants and children admitted to the intensive care unit require assistance with their breathing. On average the PICU admits between 750 and 800 children each year, around 640 of whom will receive treatment on a Life Support Machine. William Booth, Senior Nurse/Matron for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit told us that an additional life support machine will mean they can treat even more critically ill babies and children from Bristol and throughout the region to ensure many families are able to celebrate the special time of Christmas year after year.
