Medical Ward (Ward 38)
A new medical ward was built recently, as an extension to the hospital, to provide additional inpatient accommodation for patients aged 0 to 16 who suffer from a range of conditions such as cystic fibrosis, arthritis, diabetes and children with special needs requiring specialist individual care. The Ward also treats children who have infectious illnesses and who are cared for in isolation.
The Grand Appeal funded over £100,000 to provide a vibrant and stimulating environment for patients to compliment the visual art that is present throughout the hospital. Funds raised provided an art-enhanced nurses station, en-suite bedrooms, a garden and a playroom. Funding these areas helped to provide the patient with an environment tailored to helping them recover and divert their minds from their illness.
Bereavement Services
The Appeal funds a Service of Remembrance which is a non religious service for families of children who have passed away in the hospital which gives them the opportunity to play music or have a reading in memory of the child.
The Appeal also supports the Rainbow Room which is used by parents to be with their child when they have passed away. We support the room with refurbishments and facilities for the benefit of grieving parents and families.
Refurbishment and facilities for the Renal Unit
We have provided funding for the Hospital’s Renal Unit which is used by children aged 0-18 years from all over the South West, who have problems with their kidneys and who may require a Kidney Transplant. Children visit the hospital 3-4 times a week to receive treatment; for acute renal failure, patients may require treatment daily. Therefore these children spend a long time in Hospital and it is very important to ensure they have the very best facilities and environment.
