Based at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is NEST (Newborn Emergency Stabilisation and Transfer).
The NEST team responds to emergency calls for sick newborn babies in Cheltenham, Gloucester, Swindon, Bath, Taunton, Yeovil and Weston-super-Mare, Devon and Cornwall.
Critically ill babies who need advanced medical treatment - such as brain cooling treatment after birth asphyxia or for cardiac surgery) – which is not available in local district general hospitals are stabilised on site by staff from NICU and are then transported to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Bristol for urgent treatment.
NEST has transported more than 230 babies since it was established in April 2008. |
