Bristol Children’s Hospital serves a population of 1.7 million children and has four main roles:

1. It is a community hospital for the children of Bristol, providing treatment for everything from routine conditions to cancer and heart surgery.

2. It is the regional specialist hospital for the children of the South West and South Wales, providing seriously ill children with specialist care and treatment that their local hospitals are not equipped to offer.

3. It is a centre of excellence in the UK for a range of services including the treatment of cancer, leukemia and heart conditions. It is internationally recognised for the pioneering work of its Bone Marrow Transplant Unit.

4. It is an acclaimed teaching and research hospital for pediatric doctors and nurses. Its work has placed it at the heart of internationally significant research into diabetes, cot deaths, childhood cancer and leukaemia.

The new hospital building was opened in 2001 as the first purpose-designed hospital for children in the UK.

Each year, the Hospital treats:

  • over 70,000 children with all different illnesses
  • over 15,000 inpatients and day case patients
  • over 30,000 outpatient visitors
  • over 25,000 patients in A&E
