  • Music Therapy

  • A state registered professional Music Therapist visits children in the hospital 3 times a week to interact with the children and provide them with a creative outlet for the many different feelings that children experience whilst they are in the hospital. It also provides an enjoyable diversion from the invasive procedures and treatments the child faces each day.

  • Adolescent Ward

  • 18 TVs with built in DVD players were purchased for the adolescents on this ward for entertainment whilst being treated for their illnesses. Also, 7 chairs were purchased for the comfort of parents who are staying at their child’s bedside whilst on the ward.

  • Arts Programme

  • The Grand Appeal funds the entire Arts Programme of participatory and art enhancement at the children’s hospital and also funds the salary of the part time arts coordinator. The Arts Enhancement Programme is integral to the hospital’s strategy of creating a warm and welcoming environment for the patient and their family, acknowledging that

    • The arts, through colour, imagery, music, poetry, and performance – as part of life in a hospital – can contribute to the enhancement of the environment for children, families and staff and help to ‘normalise’ that environment.

    • A child’s participation in art develops the creative aspects of play, enabling them to divert their minds from their illness and focus on a stimulating and diverting outlet.

    • A parent’s expectation of high-quality medical care is even, unconsciously, symbolised in the environment in which that care is given. Patients and families have a warm and welcoming feel when entering the hospital

    • The hospital is genuinely family-friendly which has evolved through a process of consultation with parents, patients and families.

    • The hospital offers art, which is integrated into the fabric of the building and indeed into the culture of the overall environment.

  • Puppet Residency - A local puppet company are visiting the hospital once a week for a period of six months. The children are given the opportunity to meet the puppets as well as learn how to become a puppeteer and create their own stories. Two local individuals, a puppeteer and a ceramist run this workshop.

  • Making Sense - Here patients are given an opportunity to explore their senses through the usage of digital cameras, drama sessions, poetry, and photo collages associated with the senses. For example, children can write poems about their favourite food, others can make photo collages and rhymes associated with the way materials feel. This will lead to an exhibition in the Hospital. A local freelance photographer runs this workshop.

  • Glass Play - Children in Bristol Children's Hospital have the opportunity to make Jewelled Treasure boxes, Mosaic Window Hangings and making their own kaleidoscope with the help of a local artist who has a degree in Stained Glass Art.

  • Water World Sea Scape' - Children are able to participate in mixed media (using two or more types of art material), storytelling and imagery through creating their own underwater sea story. An individual who is a teacher of fine arts, performing arts and who is a ceramist will run this workshop.

  • 'Journeys' - With the help of a professional photographer, the children are able to explore themselves using photography as a visual language and learn how images can be used to convey meanings, ideas and so on. Through a series of fun and interesting workshops the children are encouraged to develop a theme for their photographs that will finally be exhibited. In addition to learning about how to express their feelings, the children will be able to develop new skills and have the opportunity to learn about photography.

  • Book Project - With the help of a local drama teacher, the children are encouraged to take photos of what they feel is important to them whilst they are a patient of the Bristol Children's Hospital. This will then be published into a book, possibly on sale at Wallace and Gromit's Grand Appeal, so that visitors, interested parties and members of the community can see the valuable roll played by the hospital to its patients.
